Reflection Task – 35%
The purpose of the Reflection assessment is to demonstrate your understanding and application of the concepts learned throughout this unit of study. To do this, you will reflect on the peer and instructor feedback you have received throughout this UoS, your revision choices based on that feedback, your overall progress as a writer, and what you have learned about your writing through this unit of study.
The main goal of this assignment is to apply what you have learned about your writing throughout the semester through the processes of drafting, revision, reflection, and self and peer review.
Your reflection should cover:
- How you have considered and incorporated feedback throughout the semester. For example, which suggestions did you incorporate and which did you ignore? Why?
- How your revision and reflection processes demonstrate awareness of your rhetorical situation and understanding of the UoS concepts(referencing, ethos, logos, pathos, editing, researching, proofreading, rhetorical situation, rhetorical context, etc..). How has your writing process changed? How have you changed as a writer? How do you know
- How might you build on what you have learned—for example, how might the sentences and paragraphs you have written in this class become part of a future academic essay—or—if and where might you publish your revised writing? A blog? A newspaper? Social media? The aim is to think about the role of sentences and paragraphs within extended pieces of academic or professional writing—how everything fits together (i.e., the big picture)–and how you might use what you have learned in future courses–as well as in everyday writing contexts.
Assessment Structure
Your assignment should include the following:
- A brief introductory paragraph – on the 3 things
- A reflective statement on your drafting, revising, and editing process over the semester based on peer and instructor feedback throughout the semester—i.e., why you chose to make the changes you did and how/why these changes have improved your assignments
- A broader reflective statement on the UoS as a whole and what you have learned about the writing process from the assignments, the readings, discussions with others, peer review, self review, tutorial discussions, lectures, etc. You need not cover all of these, but any aspect of the UoS is open for reflection, and more detailed examples usually result in a clearer reflection.(eg, on ethos, pathos and logos, referencing, editing, quoting, grammar and punctuation, rhetorical situation, rhetorical context, proofreading) —-> look at lecture slides
Assessment Criteria
The Revision/Reflection assignment will be assessed according to the following criteria:
- Reflection on your revision and writing processes and what you have learned about both throughout the semester.
- Clarity and correctness of your writing, including grammar, punctuation, and referencing, including paraphrase, summary, and quotation (if sources are used).
- Following instructions, including formatting requirements.
Final Note
Have fun with this assignment, and don’t be afraid to show your creativity. Your teachers genuinely want to know what you have learned and how you have applied new concepts to your writing process(es).
In each assignment that you have completed for this UoS, you have been asked to include a reflective statement. Think of this assignment as an overall reflective statement on the UoS as a whole—a cumulative reflective statement on all of the assignments and what you have learned from them. We want to know how your writing process has changed—and how you have grown as a writer.
