[Task] According to Spiro (2009) “Archival management systems are a kind of software that typically provides integrated support for the archival workflow, including appraisal, accessioning, description, arrangement, publication of finding aids, collection management, and preservation” (1). While no single archival management system will be appropriate for every archive, there are several criteria that one should consider when selecting an archival management system. Your task for this assignment is to read Spiro’s 2009 CLIR Report. Then, interview an archivist and find out which of Spiro’s 13 criteria were taken into consideration when determining which type of archival management system to adopt. Then, for each of the 13 criteria, please describe the experiences your archivist conveyed to you when implementing their selected archival software management system within their institution. Please make sure you indicate the strengths & weakness of the archival management system used and its’ impact to existing institutional workflows.
[Purpose] The purpose of this assignment is to gain an understanding of the criteria used in the selection of an archival management system and its impact on existing institutional workflows.
[Criteria] Using Spiro’s 2009 CLIR Report as a guide – https://www.clir.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/spiro_Jan13.pdf – please find out what features of the institutions archival management system are most important to your archival institution. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the archival management system? What impact did the adoption of the archival management system have on existing institutional workflows?
