¨Truths¨ Behind the Historical Events

Citing examples from After the Fact, discuss some of the problems with the reconstruction of historical events. Is it ever possible to know the “truth” about a historical event? To what extent can we reliably reconstruct the motives and experiences of the people who participate in those events? How are these issues reflected in the writings of Sacks?

Must use 5 or more quotes from both “An Anthropologist on Mars” by Oliver Sacks and “After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection” by James W. Davidson and Mark H Lytle.

Use the examples from the following chapters only:
“The Strange Death of Silas Deane”
“The View from the Bottom Rail”
“The Mirror with a Memory”
