Class,

The length of the paper was most challenging for me since this is the longest paper I wrote throughout all of the college courses. Other challenges of the assignment were finding enough references and reviewing the paper. Compiling research for the paper was a challenge due to the high number of references required in the assignment instructions. I used the university’s library to find all of the references used in the final project. This site contains plenty of resources that relate to the chosen topic. The challenge was finding over 15 peer reviewed sources for the literature review. In the end, I was able to find a sufficient amount of resources to complete the paper. Another challenge in finalizing the project was completing the review. I made a few minor mistakes that I overlooked during the review of a couple of the weekly assignments. The most prevalent mistakes were due to formatting issues. For example, I included a reference on the reference page that I was going to use but decided not to include the reference in the paper. The problem is that I forgot to remove the reference from the reference page. This is a mistake that I should notice during the review of the paper.

While researching the paper, I learned new information regarding how a seaport storage yard can influence seaport congestion. Many factors can slow down cargo operations in a storage yard, such as terminal gate hours, container arrangement. While the seaport may be open to container ships seven days a week, the terminal gates may not be open on the weekends (Moini et al., 2012). Limited gate hours cause containers to fill the storage yard to capacity that leads to traffic congestion in and around the seaport facilities. The arrangement of containers can increase efficiencies in the movement of containers by yard machines. A perpendicular arrangement of containers provides quick access to yard machines for efficient movement around the storage yard (Wong & Cozan, 2010).

I may not be able to apply the knowledge that I gained from the research of this paper in my life because I do not work at a seaport. However, I can use the skills and knowledge that I gained from writing this research paper in future college courses and in the work environment. My expectations of graduate course are extensive writing and writing the final project for this course will help me prepare for future courses. The writing skills gained in this course are also beneficial in the work environment from preparing official correspondence within the organization and outside the organization.

There are some incredible books out there on green logistics. I wish I had more time to read all of the books I purchased before having to complete my final paper. I would have liked to have included what I learned about the relationship between capitalism/economics and the green movement, but I ran out of pages on my paper. It is definitely a topic I would like to explore further once I am done with classes.

What is ONE concept, process, term, etc. that you learned in researching your topic?

I did not know about the extent to which the American military was concerned about climate change. Under Obama’s Administration, the military was preparing for security implications brought on by changing weather patterns and rising sea levels that will contribute to hunger, poverty, government instability, and conflicts. In 2014, then Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel stated, “In our defense strategy, we refer to climate change as a ‘threat multiplier’ because it has the potential to exacerbate many of the challenges we are dealing with today – from infectious disease to terrorism. We are already beginning to see some of these impacts” (Hagel, 2014, para. 3). Granted this idea has probably been placed on the backburner under the current administration, but it was once recognized.

How will you apply this new knowledge in your life?

I will certainly be more conscious of how politicians view climate change before casting my vote. My hopes are that private companies continue to seek innovative ways to be more environmentally friendly. Fortunately, this world has some incredible minds that are working every day to improve our lives. Elon Musk, Bill Nye, Neil deGrasse Tyson, and Stephen Hawking are a few of the many brilliant individuals working to ensure a better life for the generations to come
