In this case study, Britney is a 25-year-old female and is the mother of 7-month-old baby boy James. Britney is living with Sam, who works part-time delivering auto parts, is her boyfriend and father of James. She is unemployed and does not attend any school. Britney and Sam have a long history of severe polysubstance abuse, including heroin addiction. Britney admits that she used heroin, drank alcohol and smoked marijuana and tobacco during her pregnancy. Consequently, James was born with birth defects including two stomachs, one of which is outside of his body. It is anticipated that James will require medical treatment for the remainder of his life. Britney faces many barriers within her current situation. Her relationship with Sam is not healthy, as Sam is physically and verbally aggressive. Recently Sam was arrested and jailed for DUI and possession of a controlled substance.
