Comparing the Hmong and American courtship and wedding cerominies

INSTRUCTIONS
Choosing a Topic:
For this paper you will choose either another culture, or a sub/counter-culture of our
society, research previous studies about them, gather data, or make direct observations on this
group, and then write an ethnography or ethnology-style paper analyzing aspects of this culture,
utilizing concepts and methods we learned in class.
This paper should be about a topic that you are interested in, regardless of how different
it may be from topics covered in this course, provided that you incorporate concepts from the
course in the approach and discussion of your topic (i.e., kinship, gender, economics, ritual etc.).
Think about taking either an ethnographic (one culture) approach, or an ethnological (comparing
multiple cultures) approach. Will you adopt a top-down perspective? Or a bottom-up
perspective? What aspects of this culture/s will you focus on? Feel free to contact me directly if
you are having trouble choosing a topic or finding resources about your topic.
Proposal:
First, you will put together a one to two page proposal document that summarizes what
you plan to research and write about in the final paper. This can be either an outline or a short
essay/abstract. This document must also include a list of (at least 3-5) references and/or sources
of information you will use to write your paper. This list of references should be formatted in
bibliographic format, just as they will appear in your final bibliography.

Research Paper:
You will be writing a five to six page research paper on your topic. Papers should be
double spaced, typed in 12 point font, with one inch margins. Avoid using too many direct
quotations, I want to hear from you. Your papers should be well organized around your main
topic and draw upon scholarly sources such as peer-reviewed journal articles, ethnographies, and
books to support your points. Do not rely upon internet sources such as Wikipedia, or news
magazines such as TIME. All sources must be properly cited with in-text citations using the
author’s last name and date of publication, e.g., Booker 2017), or, if referencing a specific page
(Booker 2017:196). All papers will be crosschecked by computer software that is able to detect
instances of plagiarism (copying other sources without proper citation).

Bibliography
Learning how to properly cite references and sources of information is an essential skill
in any discipline. We will go over how to put together a bibliography in class, how to take
advantage of library databases and reference software such as endnote. Students will receive a
grade on their one to three page bibliography, distinct from the grade on the body of the research
paper. You may use either MLA, APA, or Chicago style, but once you pick one, use it
consistently. Consult this website for further information of how to use citations properly: The
bibliography does not count toward your five to six pages.
