Carlos Manzanares Holmes English 12/ Fourth Period 29 January 2018 Outline Introduction line: Hook: “He was an old man who fished alone in a skiff in the Gulf Stream and he had gone eighty-four days, now without taking a fish. In the first forty days a boy had been with him. But after forty days without a fish, the boy’s parents had told him that the old man was now definitely and finally salao, which is the worst form of unlucky” (Hemingway 1). Bridge: The old man, whose name’s Santiago, has not caught a fish In eighty-four days. He Is hungry and he resorts to eating his bait and also a dolphin. He wishes the young boy, whose name Is Manolin but most of the times he refers to him as “young boy” was there to help him get the Marlin. Thesis: The old fisherman Is somewhat of a hero, who demonstrates that he still has what It takes to be a man, even though his struggle with age, hunger, and wounds are great. He always stayed calm and he his mind clear he does not lose faith and compares himself to DiMaggio who has bone spur and knows DiMaggio could do anything and so could he. Christian Allegory: Christian allegory Is Involved In the story “ The Old Man and the Sea”. This theme appears mostly on day four which Is when old Santiago Is tier and wants to go to his little house and sleep. He has been with the Marlin for four days and has not seen until It starts jumping and Santiago has finally seen what he Is against. The Marlin gives a Christian allegory to Christ. “Then the fish came alive, with his death in him, and rose high out of the water showing all his great length and width and all his power and his beauty. He seemed to hang in the air above the old man in the skiff. Then he fell into the water with a crash that sent spray over the old man and over all of the skiff” (Hemingway 94). Hemingway understood the truth deeply but failed to apply It to his life and sadly he took his own life. Hemingway used Christian allegory In his books really often, If a Christian or religious person read his books they would get offended from his writing but other people saw something else, they saw the way he looked at life which was typically not good since he always tried to escape reality In one way or the other. Love: Love In “The Old Man and the Sea” plays through the whole book since old Santiago has a sincere love for the young Manolin. Santiago really loved his wife but after she died he felt lonely and In that, he took a portrait he had of them together since that made him feel even lonelier than what he was without her. Young Manolin has a sincere love for old Santiago since Santiago tough Manolin how to fish since he was five years of age. Manolin was always by Santiago′s side but when his parents Interfere he had no choice but to listen to them and leave Santiago alone since Manolin’s parents though Santiago had no luck left. Santiago wished that all that he was going through was a dream he’d wished that he hadn’t gotten so far to fish. He missed young Manolin and wished he was there to help him when he got the cramp In his hand or to help him get the Marlin. At the end of the book when Santiago finally came back to his home Manolin saw him and all of the cuts he had In his hands and started to cry and Manolin did not care who saw him he was glad Santiago was back but hurt him that he was hurt and bad. Resistance to defeat: These theme plays a really big role, If old Santiago would have given up then there wouldn′t be much of a story. No matter what pain Santiago felt he never gave up and actually compared himself to DiMaggio who Is a Baseball player who had bone spur and said If he could play perfectly then he must not give up and keep on going. Old Santiago went through a lot of pain but he never gave up and keep thigh. “He woke with the jerk of his right fist coming up against his face and the line burning out through his right hand. He had no feeling of his left hand but he braked all he could with his right and the line rushed out. Finally, his left hand found the line and he leaned back against the line and now it burned his back and his left hand, and his left hand was taking all the strain and cutting badly. He looked back at the coils of line and they were feeding smoothly” (Hemingway 82). He already had a cut on his arm and now another one but never gave up. He always keeps his mind clear and always made a plan to get the Marlin without making It suffer more the what It already Is. Santiago never gave up and a sort of way he got his energy was the love for the Lions In his dreams which he visited In Africa when he was young and also the love he has for young Manolin which he knew he could not let down. V. Author′s Style: Hemingway’s style of writing Is very simple and anybody can understand, even If one Is not a big reader they should look Into his books. “I have tried simply to write the best I can. Sometimes I have good luck and write better than I can” (Unknown). Hemingway does not use fancy words and get one bored since they cannot understand what the author Is trying to say. Though there′s nothing wrong with authors who use big words there will be some that will not understand and It Is really hard to keep up with the story. “From almost the beginning of his writing career, Hemingway′s distinctive style occasioned a great deal of comment and controversy. Basically, his style is simple, direct, and unadorned, probably as a result of his early newspaper training. He avoids the adjective whenever possible, but because he is a master at transmitting emotion without the flowery prose of his Victorian novelist predecessors, the effect is far more telling.” (CliffNotes) Hemingway used a lot of symbolism In his stories. For example, he used Santiago to resemble Jesus. “Santiago, for example, has often been compared to Christ In the way he suffers. His bleeding hands, the way he lies on his hands, the way he lies on his bed with his arms outstretched, all have clear parallels In the story of Christ’s crucifixion”. (Someone In the Paper 202). Hemingway used a simple and direct style but not many Christian’s liked him since they found his books offensive In one way or the other, while the other side says that they should look up to him because he could learn how to write better but won′t get near his level of simplicity. The point of view used In “The Old Man In The Sea” Is omniscient which means “all-knowing” point of view. The omniscient narrator tells the reader more thoughts of the characters other than Santiago and Manolin, the narrator talks about the other fisherman and how they looked at Santiago. Which they were sudden but they never showed It but Instead some wear kind to him.
