Guidelines for Final Paper on the Lowenstein Family Your paper on the Lowenstein family is due Tuesday, November 21 by 10am. Please put a hard copy in my History Department mailbox. You may submit the paper early. Choose three documents from the Lowenstein family archives, and at least one work of art by Maria, and explain their significance, using other assigned materials to help you analyze them. First, describe each document. For example, what type of document is it? When was it produced? What was its purpose? Who is the author? Is there a central message you can discern? (Of course, relevant questions will vary depending on which document you are describing.) Then, analyze the significance of these documents, connecting them to our assigned materials and works of art created by Maria, Henry’s mother (see links below). What does one learn about the Lowenstein family and their experiences by reading these documents? How do the documents relate to one another? In what ways do they illustrate the history we have learned through our other assignments? We also viewed examples of Maria′s artwork at the library. (Hunger, Despair, Job, Elias and the Ravens, two self-portraits). Do you see the family’s experiences reflected in Maria’s works of art? Here is a link to DU library′s Special Collections web site with digitized images of the documents: https://specialcollections.du.edu/islandora/object/codu%3A58134 You may include a document that was not among those we viewed together at the library. However, you should ask me whether the text you have in mind would be appropriate for this assignment. Think about the overview in Winks and Adams, Hitler’s speeches, Triumph of the Will, the readings and films on Nazi art looting and the Holocaust, and the Allied art recovery effort. Try to incorporate at least three of these assignments. Here is a slide show with some examples of Maria′s art. Some of the dates are not known but please include the date when available. You may refer to paintings in the video, just make sure you cite the clip: Arts District, Maria Lowenstein, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKNxSZlg1Lg (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. The project should be 8 to 10 double-spaced pages, using 1” margins and 12-point Arial font. I′m getting this specific so everyone has a standard guideline to help you know how much you should be writing. You should write the essays using the assigned course materials and Lowenstein documents. You may also refer to any materials posted on Canvas, if you see connections to those sources. Do not use outside readings. You do not need to provide formal footnotes but you should cite all information that comes from your sources, by providing in parentheses the author’s name and page number. You may also refer to the films we have watched by providing the film title. If you cite statistical information or ideas given in lectures, cite the lecture date. (ex.: Class lecture, 7 November 2017) Same with a slide show (Slide Show 7 November 2017) You do not need to provide a bibliography or works cited page. Anyone found guilty of committing plagiarism – presenting someone else’s ideas as your own – will be given an automatic “F” for the exam, and may receive an “F” for the course. If you’re not sure what constitutes plagiarism, feel free to ask me. Be careful! Plagiarism is a tempting solution when you are under pressure, but it is also very easy to detect. It’s just not worth the risk. Make sure you leave enough time to proofread and spell-check your paper. I will grade according to the strength of your arguments and analyses. (see criteria below) However, slopping writing, spelling errors, and formatting inconsistencies weaken an essay. Late papers will be marked down by a letter grade each day past the deadline. For example, a B+ paper that is turned in a day late becomes a C+ paper. A paper turned in on the due date but after 10am will be considered one day late. If you need help with writing, please seek assistance with the DU Writing Center in the Anderson Academic Commons. I will grade the final paper according to the following criteria: Argument Does it offer a valid argument? Think about phrasing the argument in terms of what one learns by studying the Lowenstein family documents. Use of Evidence Does the essay include the required variety of evidence from the Lowenstein archives and assigned readings and films? Try to use at least five assigned materials. Is the evidence cited sufficiently and correctly? Are quotations used with appropriate frequency? (Enough to provide evidence and show that you are analyzing the readings, but not so many that you minimize your own voice.) Clarity and Style Is the essay well organized? Does the writing flow well from one paragraph to the next? Does it avoid run-on sentences and sentence fragments? Is word choice varied and appropriate? Mechanics and Format Is the grammar correct? Is the essay proofread, without punctuation and spelling errors? Does it adhere to margin, font and line spacing guidelines?
