Gender

Ethnographic Observations & Reflections

Post findings on the designated Course Collections Blog

Step 1: Find/buy a magazine that you are unfamiliar with and have never looked through before. Take an inventory of all of the images—focusing on those with people.

Step 2: Explore/play with grouping the images in different ways:
–by gender male, female individuals and groups; mixed gender groups; gender neutral images; –by types of “gazes” (forms, directions, social interactions—see gaze notes for details;
–by purposes of the image
–by size and placement of the image on the page and locations in the magazine;
–and any other ways that might emerge

Step 3: Select a grouping of 3-5 images that suggest a visual motif reflecting a set of values/attitudes about gender identity, relationships, or roles . Write 2 paragraphs explaining the motif and what you see in the images to support your findings.

post a sample image of your identified motif and the following information in the Course Collections Blog

Focusing/relying on what you find in the magazine itself and observed in your explorations—

a. name & date of the magazine: and any information about the publisher (is it an independent, part of a larger group, where are the publication offices/editors located, etc.) and frequency of publication (is it a monthly, weekly, etc.)
b. purposes: What is/are purposes of the magazine? (is there a mission statement?)
c. audiences: Who is the magazine directed at (target audiences)? Is there one primary audience or multiple audiences? What are the demographics (gender, age, income, locale).
d. visual motif paragraphs from Step 3 above.
