Interview Instruction Sheet
You will write a 3-4 page paper on an interview conducted with someone who is drastically different in terms of diversity factors we covered in class or in your text, i.e. race, ethnicity, gender, affectual orientation, age (65+), religion, or a person with disability. Please do NOT choose a grandparent or other relative to do this assignment. Also, do NOT choose a friend. Stretch yourself by going a bit beyond your comfort level. A form will be provided to get permission from your interviewee, and this form must be included when you turn in your paper. Make sure your paper examines the diversity factor and how it impacted you and your interviewee. Write your paper in narrative form (like a story), not in “I said” and “s/he said.”
You will need to do research for this paper. At least two (2) references (from professional journals) must be used to get background data for the interview. Thus, you should have a reference page and citations within your paper. HINT: Information gained from interviews should be cited. Wikipedia and online dictionaries are NOT acceptable resources.
During the interview explore what life has been like for that person, using the following general guidelines to get your dialog started. Use your research to generate more specific questions that will enhance your understanding and appreciation for your interviewee’s life experience with discrimination and oppression.
• Family life and messages that stick out in their mind about what the family was about and its place in the world given the diversity issue. Family values/religion. How did these come into play?
• Places where they lived and reasons for moving. Were issues of diversity problematic in any way?
• Messages they received from school, peers, society about people who were “different,” in particular messages they received about their difference.
• How their life was impacted by being a member of this particular population group. How did issues of privilege, prejudice, and discrimination impact their lives?
• What was hard about living as a member of this particular group?
• What would they like other people to know about their particular population group?
I do not want a “report” on the “facts” of your interviewee’s life. This information along with demographic information should be contained in your abstract. Nor do I want a lot of peripheral information that may be interesting but that doesn’t factor into the issue of diversity and its impact on this person’s life, life choices, life chances, etc. Your conclusion should include a brief analysis of how their “difference” has impacted their life and examination of how your life may have been impacted differently as a member of a different population. Discuss your overall reaction to the experience. Do NOT forget this second part of the assignment! See the “grading sheet” for more details.
Please follow good writing skills with this paper, i.e. spelling, punctuation, sentence structure. You should review the APA format for writing paper
