Topic: Women in British history are usually portrayed as docile and silent characters. Discuss the roles of women in William Shakespeare’s tragedy play Macbeth and in the poems ‘the nymph’s reply to the shepherd’, ‘the wife’s lament’, and Geoffrey chaucer’s ‘ the wife of bath’. Are the women within the stories represented as passive or direct? Obedient or willful? What are the women’s actions and thoughts reveal about the society and culture of the time period in which each story was written?
