Week 5: The Impact of Health and Social Policy in Advocating Change
Let’s step back this week and look at the environment in which we live. In your local environment, you may see individuals who are homeless or addicted to illegal drugs, veterans with mental health issues, or immigrants who are not in this country through legal means. Ask yourself, “How do these individuals access health services? What policies are in place to protect these groups of underserved individuals?”
Social policy directly impacts health care policy and health care outcomes. This week is a review of major social issues that are the focus of nurses’ advocacy, as well as the nurse’s role in advancing these issues. You will explore how social policy impacts health care outcomes and why nurses should be concerned with influencing social policy (http://www.cdc.gov/socialdeterminants/index.htm).
In your Discussion this week, you will explore determinants of health and their impact on the community as well as your practice

Discussion: Influencing Health and Social Policy
What are the unmet health care needs you see in your community? What determinants of health are related to these unmet needs and what determinants require action and advocacy efforts? How do your identified issues impact your work and your sphere of influence? Consider some of the following examples that affect communities: various needs of veterans (homelessness, post-traumatic stress), immigration, undocumented workers, medical and/or legalized marijuana, reproductive health care, unemployment, poor environmental conditions, limited access to health care, and lack of heath care. How do these issues impact community health and what is your role in the solution of these issues?

Post a response to the following:
• How do the determinants of health (as listed in the lead-in) impact the health of your community?
• How does a particular health determinant impact your practice? (You may choose to address a health determinant that is not listed.)
• As a nursing professional, what can you do about it?
• What are several ways that you can advocate for change in this area?
• Why might you choose to not get professionally involved in this area or in others like it?

Hello Writer:

Make sure you answer all the questions asked for the discussion and use references appropriately (less than 5 years, alphabetically organized, proofread…). I am getting low grades for Academic low writing level. Once again, I work in a Labor and Delivery Unit, so you can choose a topic that relates to this population. I added some references that you can use. Do not hesitate to use your resources as well
