The essay analyzes at least 3 primary texts (poems or short stories)
It will be supported by at least 6 secondary references (academic articles or books chapters) from UMUC databases.
Below are some generic topics to look at as a starting point – these may stimulate your thinking:
the outlook or worldview of a character and its consequences in three short stories (consider plot, narration, character, setting, figurative language, diction etc. as these apply)
the development of a major character (which may or may not include internal conflict) from the beginning of a literary work to its end in three short stories(consider plot, narration, character, setting, figurative language, diction etc. as these apply)
the nature and significance of a conflict between two characters (or two groups of characters) and the way this conflict is ultimately resolved in three stories(consider plot, narration, character, setting, figurative language, diction etc. as these apply)
specific conceptions of human experience suggested by three poems and the way the form of the poem supports this conception (consider figurative language, imagery, the use of poetic line, meter, rhyme, sound as these apply)
Preliminary Thesis statement: The setting and imagery can have a profound impact on the meaning, hidden or otherwise, of a story or poem.

In “Y’all keep it up” Martin describes in detail the character of “One Crazy Summer” by Rita Williams-Garcia. Martin talks about the characters in the story and how they influence and are influenced by the setting around them. This directly ties into my essay. I think it could be a good resource because it focuses a lot on the setting, but it could also not be so good because it does focus on character as well. While focus on character isn’t a bad thing by any means, it’s not the focus of my essay so it doesn’t help me.
Mays, K. J. (2014). The norton introduction to literature (11th ed.).
The Norton is a wonderful reference that I can use in my paper. After each poem there is a section describing the poem, sometimes with thought provoking questions. I can use these questions to help with ideas for my paper, as well as support and argue against my own position that is presented. The Norton also has writing on elements of poems, settings, themes and diction that will help strengthen my essay.

This article is about single player video games and how they are perceived by modern society. I think this could be a very powerful article for me to use because I’m very familiar with all kinds of video games and I can relate to what the writer is writing about. This is important because I can argue for and against the things the writer is saying and use it to strengthen my on paper.
Shaw, Geraldine. “The Multisensory Image And Emotion In Poetry.” Psychology Of Aesthetics, Creativity, And The Arts 2.3 (2008): 175-178. PsycARTICLES. Web. 26 Apr. 2015.
This article is significant because it analyzes the impact of imagery and emotion created in works of poetry, Through a conducted study, the researchers were able to identify aspects of imagery that help form the linguistics of poems. I can use this to support my thesis that setting and imagery are important to the overall meaning of a poem.
Warhol, Robyn. “Describing The Unseen: The Visceral And Virtual Construction Of Spaces In Bleak House.” Style 48.4 (2014): 612. MasterFILE Premier. Web. 26 Apr. 2015.
This resource is a good one because it directly analyzes space, character and setting in Charles Dickens’ “Bleak House.” The article describes how Dickens uses spaces and boundaries to carefully craft settings. This can help support my argument that setting is important, and usually has some kind of underlying meaning to the story.
