Lighting Assessment 2 consists of two parts. Part 1 addresses qualitative and design-process considerations for the use of daylighting in your selected design (studio). Part 2 addresses detail design strategies to optimize daylighting in your selected design (studio). Both parts explicitly address the role of communication in high-performance architecture.

PART 1: “Qualitative Analyses of Daylighting Opportunities”

This part requires students to analyse and communicate the daylighting opportunities applicable to their selected design. By way of informed consideration of climate, site, programme (i.e., function(s), technologies(s); form; spatial planning) and brief (i.e., objectives and concepts) students are to identify the opportunities for and barriers to incorporating daylighting into their design. Students are required to explicitly communicate their analytical approach (i.e., the daylighting design process) and why/how the above factors (climate, etc.) informed their daylighting response.

Requirement and Submission:

Part 1.1. Submit one A3-size page of climate, site, programme and brief analysis diagrams illustrating your daylighting analysis. Include succinctly annotated diagrams or sketches (hand-drawn or CAD) communicating your daylight analyses (e.g. sun-path, overshadowing, views, etc.) and the opportunities (e.g., form and planning options) for daylighting in your design.

Use drawing scales optimized to communicate effectively. To organize your presentation you may wish to consider the spatial and temporal scales of analyses (e.g. climate, site, programme, etc.), the stages of the design process (e.g. sketch, design development, etc.) and the hierarchy of values attributed to programmatic and brief criteria. Your submission must prioritise graphic communication, using diagrams, colours, symbols and shapes to convey meaning.

Mark for Part 1.1: 60% of Part 1

Part 1.2. Submit one A4-size page illustrating your daylighting design process. As a guide, you may wish to communicate your daylighting design approach using an annotated and/or illustrated flow- chart, graph or diagram. Alternatively, you may wish to adopt a “mapping approach” using a (e.g. context) plan with layers and “pop-up” boxes to communicate your analytical process.

Ordering principles such as scale (spatial and temporal), relationship (linear, circular, etc.), hierarchy and sequence and may help you to organize your ideas. Your submission must include both graphic and written content. The objective of this part is to make explicit and effectively communicate your daylight design process.

Mark for Part 1.2: 40% of Part 1

Marking Criteria for Part 1:

Clarity and effectiveness of daylight analysis framework.

Depth and acuity of daylight analysis.

Evidence of deep engagement with climate, site, programme and brief.

Evidence of critical reflection on the daylight design process.

Effective use of graphic and combined graphic/written communication.

Attention to presentation, spelling, grammar and referencing.

PART 2: “Detail Design for Optimising Daylighting”

This part requires students to analyse, evaluate and communicate detail daylighting strategies that optimize daylight in their designs (i.e. achieve appropriate levels of daylight autonomy, control solar gain and enable views).

Requirement and Submission:
Submit on one A3-size page, an annotated, dimensioned typical part of an external wall section (i.e.,

through the building façade) at 1:20 scale showing:

Typical floor slab and ceiling junctions with façade for one level (choose the level that provides the greatest challenge and creative response to daylight design)

Glazing assembly details and glass specification (thickness, visible transmittance, etc.)

Internal sunlight control features (e.g. blinds, where applicable)

External sun-shading device details (where applicable)

Solar harvesting (e.g. light shelf) details (where applicable)

Surface details (e.g. reflectance values) to control glare and enhance daylight distribution
If your daylight strategy is limited to rooflights or combines rooflights and windows in equal measure,

include a partial section through the rooflight/skylight and provide similar details as above.

Submit on one A4-size page a concise 3-column table of indicative numerical daylight performance data applicable to your design (see below), containing (a) the required (minimum) standard, (b) the design level achieved and (c) a “positive” or “to be improved” performance assessment:

Recommended minimum task illuminances (lux) (e.g. AS1680 Table 3.1)

Uniformity of illuminance for general lighting over the space (e.g. AS1680 Table 3.2)

Minimum luminance ratio (e.g. AS1680 Table 3.2 or “contrast grading” from Szokolay)

Average Daylight Factor (DF) for the space or part of the space represented in your section

Provide a brief explanation (on the same A4 page) of your analysis method, design changes made to optimize daylighting and reference all sources. Briefly explain, where applicable, assumptions and sources for (e.g.) meteorological data for sky parameters. The use of modeling software (like Autodesk Ecotect) is encouraged. If utilised, include on the same A4-page a snapshot of the shading device design wizard and/or the daylight factor calculation analysis grid with surface lux levels and/or DFs.

Total mark for Part 2: 55% of Lighting Assessment 2 Marking Criteria for Part 2:

Evidence and depth of daylight/sunlight/reflected light considerations in detail design

Extent and success of integration of daylighting into architectural design

Evidence of attention to numerical methods, modeling and challenges for daylight design

Effective use of graphic and combined graphic/written communication.

Attention to presentation, spelling, grammar and referencing.
