Structural & Market Characteristics

Structural & Market Characteristics

Question 1: Structural Characteristics: More Similar or Different?
Lasserre and Schütte’s Chapter 4 is focused on some of the major players in the Asia-Pacific region. They discuss the Japanese kaisha and keiretsu networks, the Korean chaebol, as well as the overseas Chinese conglomerates and smaller Chinese family-run businesses. They also mention the Taiwanese and other players.
What are three similarities and differences you can identify within and between these players? Do you think there are more similarities or differences? Justify your response.
Question  2: Market Characteristics: More Similar or Different?
Lasserre and Schütte’s Chapter 3, ‘Asia as a Market’, is also focused on some of the major players in Asia-Pacific, but instead of looking within them at various structural characteristics, cultures, values, performance improvement philosophies, etc., as they do in Chapter 4, they focus on Japan, China and the ASEANIEs (i.e., variously defined as the combination of the ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and the newly industrialised economies (NIEs), such as South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore) as regional markets. To prepare for this Discussion, please read Chapter 3 in Lassere and Schütte’s from your Learning Resources.
